Classroom Materials Management
Equipment management is an important part of teaching FOSS.
Each teacher guide includes a Materials folio. It provides
an inventory list of the permanent and consumable items
in the kit, a list of materials supplied by the teacher,
and a list of items from the Measurement kit needed for
the module. Consumable materials are supplied for two uses
before replenishment is necessary. Beyond seeds, brine shrimp
eggs, and yeast, living organisms are not included in the
kit. See Sources of Organisms and Plant and Animal Care
for more information.
FOSS modules use a central materials distribution. You
organize all the materials for an investigation on a single
table called the materials station. As the investigation
progresses, one member of each group gets materials as they
are needed, and another returns the materials when the investigation
is complete. You place items at the stationstudents
do the rest.
Following the procedures described in each investigation
will make for a very safe experience in the classroom. Look
for the safety-note icon in the Getting Ready section, which
will alert you to safety concerns throughout the module.
Each kit also comes with the Safety Poster describing general
classroom safety rules to share with students.
Materials from the Measurement Kit. You
will need access to FOSS measurement tools for many of the
modules for grades 36 only. These are indicated in
the Materials folio for each module. These materials are
available from Delta Education as Measurement Tool Kits
or you can use them from your Measurement Module. Here's
the complete list.
